Because there are such major issues with the benefit system, an innovative development is the formation of a Commission on Social Security led by Experts by Experience (people with direct experience of welfare benefits) to address the issues and to develop a plan for the type of system which should actually exist. As part of this, a working group has been set up to put forward a user-centred replacement to PIP. Liberation is represented in this group, which has a particular focus on the impact of PIP on people experiencing mental distress. Now that the government plans to use PIP assessments as a single form of assessment within the benefit system, the group’s work is still more important.
